Journal Page using Kuretake Gem Watercolors

Hello Lulu Art friends, Kate here on the blog today playing with the new Kuretake Gansai Tambi Gem color set of watercolors.  Have you seen the stunning new set, they are super pretty and metallic looking and today I’m going to have a play and see how they perform.  I like to play and test out new products before creating anything with them, so for my project for Lulu Art this month I’m going to test out the Gem colors and see what they can do.

This is the new Gem color set – I have to say I was a bit surprised when I began to use them as several colors are quite pale unless you leave water in the pan to create a syrup consistency.  After using them though, I did like this as it allows you to achieve quite a variety of looks with the same paints.  Watch out for the Gem Red color though  – compared to the others it’s SUPER strong in color!

KU-212831-2

Now I’m going to complete my testing all on the one small art journal page – watercolour paper is best, mixed media paper or card a close second.

You can watch as I play and then finish the page in the video below.

Wet on Wet

First I applied water to the card and spritzed each pan with water to activate the color.  Without waiting more than a minute I dipped my brush into each color and applied a little of each to the wet journal page.

The colors were lovely and light (except for the red) and as they dried created wonderful patterns and granulation effects – I wasn’t expecting that and I loved it!

Gelli Plates

Next, I wanted to see how the colors layer so I added some syrupy consistency Gem colors (this took about 30 mins for the paint to absorb the water) to small Gelli plates (not the recommended product for this) and used the plates to stamp the watercolor onto my page.  This gave some interesting transparent layered effects and looked gorgeous, but didn’t really test how opaque these could look.

Wet on Dry

So I let the base colors dry and left the watercolor pans to become super thick, super syrupy consistency and then loaded up a mop brush with color.  Being painting over the previous colors and tap on extra color with the brush as needed.  I found that if used like this, all of the Gem colors were about 80-90% opaque and nicely covered what was below.

Time to decorate

Now to turn my road test into a page, I chose to add some acrylic paint over the dry – but unsealed watercolors, using both Night and Turquoise from Dina Wakley.  I loved how the acrylics reactivated some of the watercolor creating unique blends and secondary colors – super pretty!

I also added marks and designs with a variety of pens, black, white and gold which really finished off the page for me.

A Tim Holtz word card and it’s finished.

Super pretty, super sparkly and very informative!  I now know a bit more about the colors and how they perform and I feel ready to go make something – maybe some cards using these same techniques and colors???

SUPPLIES

Thank you for reading and I hope this shows you how these new colours might look when you use them oxxo  Go grab yours from Lulu Art today!

Make it Happen – Mixed Media Art Journal Page

20190811_172852 (2)_wm2080259875355399293..jpg

Hello lovelies!!
A pretty journal page today, playing around in my medium size, Art by Marlene 3.0 journal.

Began with a new stencil, for me, by The Crafter’s Workshop – TCW812 – Coronet Wreath. I sponged half crescents up the page in a variety of blues. It created a really pretty, but simple background for the page

Next, I used a variety of Art by Marlene products that you can get from Lulu Art Store. Collage papers, die cut books, stampBM20 – ‘feathers’ , ‘whimsy & bright’ watercolor set and also one of Marlene’s newer stamp set designs from her 3.0 collection – ‘Bohemian Flowers’

The video takes you through how I set up and created the page. I really enjoyed how it turned out… bright and cheery! I also loved that I got to use my sewing machine on this page, just a little. This is one of the benefits of a loose paged art journal like Art by Marlene offers… so great to be able to pull a page out and sew. A few loose threads here and there are always so pretty!

Easy Painted Journal Page using Dina Wakley Acrylics

Hello, fabulous Lulu Art fans – I’m back today with a really simple art journal page, something I would usually do for myself as playtime!  Recently I was lucky enough to lave a cuppa (Australia for a drink and a chat) with the fabulous Kylie fowler from Lulu Art (yes THAT Kylie!) seriously how lucky am I!!!  We were chatting about the art we do for fun – you know the sort, not for any particular purpose or project – but just because. Kylie mentioned that she doesn’t see ‘my’ play stuff anywhere and I realised that she is right – I just don’t share it!  So today I’m sharing something I would usually create for myself and then maybe decorate or maybe not!  It’s a very simple background created with one of the easiest acrylic paint techniques I know of – Paint Scraping.

Start by grabbing at least 3 colors of acrylic paint – I’m using some of the new Pastel colors from Dina Wakley (you know I love these) and after much consideration, I decided on Apricot, Mineral and Carnation.

Use an old credit card or a fancy paint scraper to add one color at a time to the page – I explain this more in the video below.

You can see the paint scraping technique here

Add a hint of glamour by adding some Golden Irridescent Gold Fine fluid acrylic and a few splashes of Lindy’s sprays in grey and purple and then leave the whole page to dry.  Then you can begin decorating!  Now the time between this process of background and decorating can take me anywhere from a few days to a few years – I have many MANY undecorated background pages.  Honestly, I just love to play and experiment and a finished page doesn’t always mean pretty or decorated for me.

For this page, I’ve mixed a custom paint color (Lapis and Night) to make Navy and added a very simple leafy flourish which I’ve embellished using paint over pens, paint pens, and a metallic gold ballpoint pen.  A little stenciling, some stamping with Archival ink and I’m calling this page finished.

I think it’s the small details that bring this one together, the stencils, the little touches of colors in multiple tones (light to dark) and some stickers to finish it all off.

Up close you can see the little details that tie the colors together.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little peek into my studio play – not everything needs to be a masterpiece for it to be worth your time!

Live Gently – Mixed Media Art Journal Page

20190519_162636.jpgHello once again Lulu Art peeps!

The video this week is the third and last in a series of three.

They all used Dina Wakley new release products. The new 6×6 white journal along with the pastel colours in the heavy body acrylic especially but also the wonderful ‘Branches’ stencil & mask set (LOVE this one!!)

All three of these pages were done in the one sitting.

This is how I would usually work, flipping between pages, using pages as palettes and then those same palette pages as backgrounds as I move along. I hardly ever have a plan to begin ( aside from what products I will begin using) and I basically just create problems with the paint and then try and reconcile those problems to some kind of solution.

On this day, this particular page was the first that I created. It is short, sweet & simple in its solution. I hope you enjoy the video.

Through the Leaves – Mixed Media Art Journal Page

20190519_163844-2.jpgHello Lulu Art peeps!

Dani here again…were you expecting Kate?

She is having a blast, on holidays in Canada, so I am here for another video. Today’s page follows directly on from my last video… using my palette paper. You have probably seen that I use a large journal under all my small ones as a palette? This makes it so easy to begin a new background and use all that left over paint. Lulu Art has a 10″ x 14″ Dina Wakley Media Journal that would be prefect size for this!!DW-352284-2I am using Dina’s new 2019 range. Pastel paints and scribble sticks – set 3, along with the ‘Branches’ mask and stencils.

Again, I am mixing all the new range with the older ranges. They are perfectly matched to do this and the new sets add so much tonal depth to the page – I am really loving all these new additions.

I also grab one of Dina’s collage tissue faces to use as a focal point

Hello again Lulu Art!
Have you taken a look at the New Dina Wakley products that Kylie has in store yet?… seriously AMAZING!

So I thought I would have a play

20190519_135147.jpg

The new square 6×6 watercolour journal and the new pastel paint range are both so easy to use with the existing bright heavy body acrylic range… I started the page with one of Dina’s stencils called ‘Wallpaper’

Next, I cracked open a favourite… the Collage Collective collage book….

If you love Dina’s work, you will not be disappointed with this journal fodder. Be warned though…the only thing you may have trouble with is actually cutting it up, as this collage book is beautiful just as it is!! – (I had to have one for keeps and one for using with this one!! )

Hope you have fun having a quick flick through during the video!

Feather Journal Cover

Hello there gorgeous people!  I am sooooooo excited to share today’s project with you –  I’m going decorate a Travelers Notebook insert cover and add a little extra strength to the cover so it holds up over time.  This is what I’ll be showing you how to make – a Travelers Notebook cover with a galaxy feather design – using yummy products from the Lulu Art store of course.

IMG_5013

Now I know not everyone likes to watch video’s on how to step-by-step pages so I have both a video and written instructions on how to make this yourself!

Step 1

Add fabric bookbinding tape to the spine to add strength, then tear vintage papers into pieces and glue onto the journal cover using Matt Medium – be generous, as this will add strength to the fragile vintage papers.
TN Cover - Feather 1 a

Step 2

Once dry, add words to the spine with Archival inks and a Tim Holtz Layering Stencil – Traveler.  Using the foam mini ink applicator gently add ink to the edges to enhance the vintage look.

TN Cover - Feather a

Step 3

Using the same Archival inks add some random stamping to the background to add a little pattern.

TN Cover - Feather f

Step 4

Use the Vintage Pastel Watercolour set from Prima to add some sheer and soft colour to the background and you can even disguise some of the text as there are 2 colours in the set almost the exact shades of vintage paper – swoon!

TN Cover - Feather f

Step 5

Add Prima’s Art Alchemy paints in Blackberry, Rich Turquoise, Pink Blush, Wild Fuschia, Pure Sunshine, Crocus Fields and Frozen Berries through the feather stencil – blend the colours a little and add in a semi ‘banded’ pattern – I created my colour bands horizontally going up the design with my palest or brightest colours in the middle and the darkest colours at the top and bottom.

TN Cover - Feather h

Step 6

Partially cover the painted design using Paynes Grey so that there are flecks of colour peeking through the darker paint.

TN Cover - Feather f

Step 7

Finish your Journal cover with a hint of lightness by adding splashes of white Sharpie paint marker to mimic stars in the night sky and adding a hint of metallic shimmer by outlining your design in gold acrylic paint.

TN Cover - Feather f

Add a word of your choice either in coordinating colours (use the same paints to colour it) or a contrasting colour for pop.

Flower Girl – Mixed Media Art Journal page

IMG_20190425_213052 (1)Always great to be back at Lulu Art! I hope everyone has been able to find some arty time in the last month?

Today I wanted to showcase Kylie’s fabulous face stencils from Artistcellar. I chose the 3/4 face ‘JOY’ for this small art journal page. These face stencils make journaling faces so quick and easy… more time for journaling and less time for stessing about face math and getting my proportions correct. Kylie has done almost all the work for you… yay!

I am also using some of StudioLight’s, Art by Marlene Signature Collection 3.0 in this video aswell… the texture plate and the HANDY size small journal. This collection will be coming to Lulu Art very soon… so keep your eye out for all the new goodies!

But that is not all… Darkroom Door’s great polka dot stencil, Dina Wakley Media – new colours and Prismacolor pencils get a work out as well.

So I hope you enjoy watching what I get up to this month.

Full list of all the supplies will follow this post.

Have fun watching!

Enjoy!
